A professional Senior Caregiver, Social Worker and Volunteer Teacher, she is dedicated to supporting elderly Gurkha women living far from their homeland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shimmy Pun, who bagged the Royal Borough of Greenwich Civic Awards 2026 in the Volunteer Category, was born in Hong Kong and raised in scenic Nepali town of Pokhara. She was brought up in a British Gurkha Army family \u2014 a heritage rooted in discipline, sacrifice and service. Today, those values shape her work within the UK\u2019s Nepali diaspora community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many elderly Gurkha women in Britain face challenges including language barriers, cultural displacement and social isolation. Through English classes, mobile education sessions and elderly support programmes run in collaboration with community and army-linked organisations, Shimmy helps bridge these gaps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her mission extends beyond practical support. She focuses on restoring confidence, dignity and independence \u2014 ensuring that elderly women feel heard, respected and valued in a society that may feel unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside her caregiving and social work, Shimmy actively promotes Nepali culture in the UK. She organises traditional performances and charity fashion events, and teaches Nepali dance and language to second-generation British-Nepalese children.
